Christmas day is a public holiday that is celebrated on 25 December each year. As far as the year 2020 is considered, it will fall on Friday, 25 December and in 2021, it will lie on the day, Saturday.

Christmas is basically celebrated by Christians all over the world and since it’s a public holiday, people celebrate it enthusiastically; even some non-Christians also celebrate it following the cultural principals.

The reason behind celebrating Christmas;

Christmas day is basically celebrated to express happiness because on this day, Jesus was born; a religious leader who taught Christians the teachings of their religion. Christians hold Jesus with a lot of respect and this is the main why his birth is given so much importance. Therefore, they celebrate it with all their joy, full of energy.

Moreover, Christians decorate a Christmas tree on this day as well, mainly to celebrate the occasion. They throw a big party and all of them gather together to celebrate this day. Furthermore, people are so cheerful on this day that they give wonderful gifts to each other.

How can we forget the arrival of Santa Clause on Christmas; children wait for him all day long, waiting for their gifts. They believe that Santa will give them whatever they wish for. Christmas comes once in a year and so people want to celebrate it as happily as possible.

Mostly all the Christians celebrate it on 25 of December but some oriental and eastern orthodox churches celebrate it on 7 January too, calling it “Old Christmas.”

History of Christmas and why is it celebrated?

Although there is no written evidence in the Bible that tells us about the birth of Jesus it was declared that Jesus was born in 440 A.D. At first, Christmas was also called yule in England. This is an old Saxon word but then it was called Christmas when Saxons were converted to Christians.

Before the 19th Century, Christmas was not celebrated in a lavish way but people just used to give gifts to each other and they were small parties but as the 19th Century arrived, a lot of things were invented in England like the Christmas ribbons, Christmas tree, Santa Claus, Christmas cards, exchanging gifts with each other, etc.

All the first social gatherings in the celebration of Christmas was observed in England. More importantly, the first Christmas card was also invented in England by John Horsely in 1843. In addition to it, in 1847, Christmas crackers were also invented by Tom Smith; a confectioner.

Christmas trees were invented in Europe and they were decorated by the people in the 16 century. Later on, during the 17 Century, people started using tinsel as well.

However, these Christmas trees were not that much famous even though they were decorated with so many things. It actually gained popularity when the English queen, Elizabeth had a marriage with Prince Albert; A german by nationality.

Nations today give a holiday on this day, being a religious occasion.
